Time Unlimited in New Zealand

September 21st 2009 05:10
New Zealand Travel Company TIME Unlimited is a small fish and a relatively young fish too, but with a fresh, innovative approach and a range of unique experiences to share, it is making quite a splash in the big pond of world tourism. It has hit the TV screens of the UK (BBC’s Extreme Fishing with Robson Green) and Germany (“Am anderen Ende der Welt. Neuseeland, Heimat der Kiwis” - On the other side of the world, New Zealand, home of the Kiwis) as well as the pages of the UK’s Daily Mail, Blinker (Europe’s biggest fishing publication) and Russia’s leading fishing magazine. And of course, they're talking and writing about it back home, down under, too - on New Zealand Maori Television, in the New Zealand Herald, the Herald on Sunday, Kia Ora (Air New Zealand Inflight Magazine), The National Business Review and NZ Fishing News. So who and what exactly is TIME Unlimited?

The company is the brainchild of bi-cultural husband and wife team, Neill and Ceillhe Sperath. Neill is of Irish and German parentage. Ceillhe is tangata whenua, (a person of the land), a descendant of the Ngapuhi (North Auckland) chiefs Patuone and Tamati Waka Nene, on her mother’s side, with the “added bonus” of an Irish father. Alongside their diverse blend of cultures, the couple has a common background in business and management. Ceillhe’s experience is in Management Consulting, with special expertise in Quality and Risk Management, while Neill has managed a number of large shopping centres across Europe. Both are keen, discerning and seasoned travelers (33 countries and counting!). Most importantly, both are passionate about Aotearoa-New Zealand - the land, the people and the culture.

Work and travel brought the two together in February 2005. Neill had just arrived to take up a job in Auckland and Ceillhe had recently returned to resume hers after traveling the world. Soon after, TIME Unlimited was born. T.I.M.E. is an acronym for “To Integrate Maori Experiences” - a perfect description of what the Sperath’s tourism company stands for and who they are as people. Unlimited, however, sums up their passion for Aotearoa-New Zealand and their vision of how it should be shared. As Neill explains “We have traveled extensively around the world and have often been disappointed by the way “tours” are organised. Often it’s just about the money and having as many people as possible in one group per tour to maximise profit. Also, often in tourism, a basic price is quoted and then customers are coerced into purchasing add-ons, such as souvenirs, extra tours or even their lunch. We wanted a totally different approach: to give our guests real, authentic and warm-hearted experiences with everything included, that have a real personal touch, in a very small and intimate group.”

TIME Unlimited’s tours are indeed real, authentic, warm-hearted Kiwi experiences. The Sperath's are people who know the country in all its rich diversity and furthermore, love to share it. And herein lies the secret of their success.

Hi Particia, I enjoyed reading this post as you write very well.

I am a big fan of inter-cultural relationships (be they between acquaintances, friends, business partners or lovers), and am more likely to be drawn to people who are in them.

I will keep TIME Unlimited in mind for next time I am in New Zealand, though I tend to enjoy my traveling experience more if I plan everything myself. I know, however, that there are some cultural experiences that are inaccessible to a person just passing through, and should I feel the need to engage with these aspects of NZ in a way informed by the local touch, I will definitely look up Neill and Ceillhe.

Thanks for your comment! And I can truly say that TIME Unlimited experiences are time spent with friends in the real heartland of Aotearoa. They've been a long time coming in a country where, since mid last century, the roads have been clogged with hulking coaches full of captive tourists who would probably have given their right arms to get out and run on those wild beaches that flashed like lightning past their windows, or strike up a conversation with those people who waved from the roadside villages. Hope you get there!
