Christchurch's Science Alive gives a whole new meaning to" hands on"
May 21st 2010 08:58
Strapped into harnesses, Matthew and Otis grope for toeholds on a sheer, 7 metre wall, then swing out and bounce their way back down.
Science Alive, in the old railway station building in Moorhouse Avenue gives a whole new meaning to hands on. What better way to find out about gravity than to drop from a great height on the climbing wall? What better way to learn about momentum than on the South Island’s steepest slide? What better place to experience centrifugal force than at the centre of the human gyroscope? What better place to come to grips with shifting tectonic plates than in the earthquake simulator?
Science Alive really does bring Science to life. But the best thing about New Zealand’s only dedicated Science centre, is the team of responsible, helpful young people on hand to explain and operate all this great stuff and to encourage the fearful as well as restrain the foolhardy.
Matthew and Otis are stunned, silent, unresisting and I suspect slightly queasy at the end of their vigorous encounter with Science.
Science Alive is at 392 Moorhouse Avenue, Christchurch. Cost; Adults NZ$14, Kids NZ$10, Family Pass (2 adults and 3 kids) NZ$45.
