Travel Stripe - October 2011

Given that Aotearoa New Zealand is a land that lives and breathes Rugby, it’s not surprising that it has embraced the 2011 Rugby World Cup with all its heart. What is surprising, however, is how demonstratively it’s done so.

We’ve always prided ourselves on our manaakitanga (our warm hospitality) So, it isn’t at all surprising that host towns all over the country have given visiting cup teams such a great welcome and such tremendous support. Nor is it surprising that the thousands of visiting supporters are full of praise for Kiwi hospitality.

We’ve always been ready pack the car (often well beyond its capacity) to travel miles and hours for a match. So, it’s not surprising that we’ve turned out in droves, no matter who’s playing, from Dunedin to Eden Park.

However we’ve always had a rather conservative cast of character (the weird, the eccentric, a few University students, the St Patrick’s College community during Taylorfest, the Wizard of Christchurch and the absolutely bonkers not withstanding!) Most of us have always been a little reluctant to “make bloody fools of ourselves” or “look bloody silly” Some of us have even muttered somewhat apologetically in the face of other nations’ excesses “Well there’s not much you can do with black”. So, it’s really quite surprising that in 2011, we’ve made complete bloody fools of ourselves, we’ve looked downright ridiculous and we’ve done all kinds of amazing things with black.

We’ve donned false beards, red, white and blue wigs and chooks’ costumes in support of the French. We’ve worn kilts for Scotland, leis and lavalavas for Tonga and Samoa. We’ve gone green for Ireland. We’ve danced in the streets. We’ve painted our sheep (yes, truly!) in the colours of the participating nations. In tiny Benneydale, way out in no man’s land between Te Kuiti and Taupo, life-sized cardboard Rugbymen from 20 different teams run along the lamp-posts. In the South Auckland, cup decoration fever caught like wild fire and consumed whole streets.

We’ve decked the country in All Blacks flags. We’ve draped ourselves in All Blacks flags. We’ve painted our faces in black (and white). And we’ve taken black costumes in directions we’d never imagined .

Nga mihi nui ki a koutou All Blacks! Last night the men in black wove sheer magic around the Wallabies in the 2011 Rugby World Cup Semi Final and the spell that has kept them from Australian defeat at Eden Park since 1985, remains unbroken.

Last week was a tense week in Aotearoa New Zealand. Many doubted a team without Carter. Many feared for Ritchie Mc Caw with his problem foot. Many doubted the new kids on the All Black block. Oz Media taunts about “choking” had everyone rattled.

But, in the end, the All Blacks played a blinder. Ritchie McCaw was his old sensational self and new boy, Aaron Cruden, proved himself.

The post game mood was a mixture of delirious joy and giddy relief.

Now one last challenge remains – the final against France next weekend!

Bravo Les Bleus! Contrary to almost everyone's expectations, France has made it all the way to the 2011 Rugby World Cup Final. Disillusioned followers, like Guillaume le Basque, who abandoned les Bleus after their shock loss to Tonga in the final pool game, must be wringing their berets back in l’Hexagone.

According to the experts French World Cup Rugby teams "have only one great game in them". But who would have believed that the 2011 équipe français were capable of even one great game? Certainly not Guillaume le Basque! Who would have believed too, that they could beat their arch-rival England just one week after the Tonga debacle? Certainly not the gob-smacked Poms! And who, almost to the bitter end, would have backed their win against Wales last night? Personne! It certainly wasn't a great game. It certainly wasn't a great win. It was lucky.

The question is now, I suppose, do les Bleus have one last great game in them? Will their luck see them through to a final victory?

Meanwhile the two other semi-finalists await their fate at Eden Park tonight. The Kiwis’ mood is one of “quiet calm and steely determination”, as they hope and pray that the long record of All Blacks wins against the Wallabies at Eden Park holds. The Aussies on the other hand, are loudly confident and counting on the All Blacks "choking" - "again"!

As the French would say “On verra! - que le meilleur équipe gagne!” (We'll see -- may the best team win)

Go the All Blacks!

Everyone loves a David and Goliath tale, where the little guy laughs in the face of the giant and topples him with a pebble. The Tonga vs France Rugby World Cup Match at Wellington’s cake tin two weeks ago was one of those tales.

With the quarter finals of the 2011 Rugby World Cup contest about to begin, the mood here in Aotearoa New Zealand is electric.

Auckland is packed and pumping as thousands of French, English and Argentine visitors hit the town. The Kiwis are out in full force too, their beloved black throwing the visitors’ red white and blues into bold relief
